How we enjoy Art & Music in our homeschool
Over the years I have enjoyed slowly adding in art and music study into our morning time routine. My husband and I both love art and it is important to us that we incorporate it into our children’s schooling. Below are resources and information for how we incorporate it into our school day.

Each year we take 7 weeks to study different great artists. This year we will study American History and many of our artists will line up with that.

•Grandma Moses

•Norman Rockwell

•Augusta Savage

This is a family favorite component of our morning time. We like to read books about the artist’s life, admire their artworks, and learn about their techniques and styles. We also enjoy visiting local art museums for field trips. I will post our art projects each week, so stay tuned for those!

Here are great books we have in our artist book basket. Note: I do buy my books second hand. I frequently check thriftbooks and have found a lot of these used and cheap on amazon.

Music is a big part of our homeschool! My kids learn basic music theory through Tin Whistle at our weekly co-op. They also play piano and my son is going to begin percussions.

Due to the pandemic, we haven’t been able to attend regular piano lessons. I found Hoffman academy and my kids LOVE it! I highly recommend it for online piano lessons. The best part- It’s FREE!

For music appreciation, we like to take 6-7 weeks to study great composers and orchestra. SQUILT music is my go-to resource for this. I love her awesome downloads and online music appreciation videos.

We also find a lot of great videos on YouTube to watch and I have a handful of fun listening activities my kids like to do. I’ll post these ideas regularly as we go throughout our school year.

Below are the artists and time periods we will focus on this school year and some of our favorite books and resources we have used.

I love to draw and I love teaching my kids to draw. We spend 6 weeks of our school year learning different drawing techniques and practicing.

This year we are using the Vintage Drawing books by The Good and The Beautiful.

Art for Kids hub is my kids favorite resource for drawing. They love to do this in their free time or quiet time.

We love to listen to audio books or I read aloud while they practice drawing. I often cover the kitchen table in butcher paper and let the kids doodle on it with scented gel pens, oil pastels, or sharpies while we listen to our great composer pieces, as well as listening to books.

If you need something with  a little more guided instruction for yourself, check out Drawing with Children.

Art in Nature

On nice weather days throughout the school year, we love to admire the greatest artist of all - God’s beautiful artwork in nature.

We use Exploring Nature With Children as a guide for nature walks and activities. I try to spend 1 week each quarter studying nature and getting the kids outdoors for a morning time. We also love taking nature field trips!
